Lights-out Automation

The Thesis

This thesis has already been decided. The page you are reading is a list of winners and the price of entry, not a scouting report. Sixteen companies, roughly $12.0B in tracked funding, a median raise of $285M, and ten of the sixteen at Series C or beyond. There is no long tail to discover: capital-intensive autonomy consolidated early around the companies that could raise at infrastructure scale, and the seed-stage entry window is closed.

One number distorts every other number here, so say it plainly: Anduril accounts for $7.0B of the cohort’s $12.0B — about 59% — and any aggregate that includes it is mostly a statement about Anduril. That is why this page shows companies, not distribution charts. Behind it: Skydio and a handful of other autonomy franchises, each in its own domain, from drones to humanoids to welding cells. Fifteen of the sixteen are American; the sole exception is Dutch.

Two structural notes. These companies sit on the hardware side of the database — outside the software-only baseline the rest of the site reports on, which is stated in the methodology below. And there are no evergreens and no bootstrap path here: you cannot revenue-fund a lights-out factory. This is the one thesis where the capital requirement is the moat.

Figures reflect the ThreadMoat dataset as of September 2, 2026. The dataset updates continuously; the numbers in the sections below recompute with every data sync.

Incumbents & Evergreens

No incumbent bench and no evergreens: capital-intensive autonomy has no bootstrap path, and the traditional automation vendors compete in a different, fixed-purpose game. The cohort itself is the establishment.

Trends Shaping This Thesis

Structural

Physical AI as Industrial Infrastructure

General-purpose robotics and autonomy stacks are being funded as infrastructure, not as machines. Capital requirements put this game out of reach for conventional seed-stage entrants.

Emerging

Manufacturing AI Capital Concentration

Factory-floor AI is the most crowded funded category in the dataset. More capital than distinct problems usually precedes a shakeout.

Full trend analysis with evidence and confidence grading is in the quarterly ThreadMoat report.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Lights-out Automation?

Operations that run with no humans present — the "lights out" factory, autonomous defense systems, uncrewed vessels and drones, humanoid labor. The thesis covers companies building toward full physical autonomy at venture scale.

Why does this page show no aggregate charts?

Because one company, Anduril, holds about 59% of the cohort’s tracked funding. Averages, medians and distributions over 16 companies dominated by one mega-raiser would describe Anduril, not the thesis. Sixteen company cards are more honest than any chart.

Can new startups still enter this thesis?

The data says the entry price is now extreme: a median raise of $285M and a cohort founded around 2018. The adjacent, still-open wave is tracked on the Closed-loop Automation page — narrower autonomy loops where seed-stage entry still happens.

Methodology

Membership. A company belongs to this cohort when “Lights-out Automation” appears in its multi-select Investment Thesis field. Theses overlap: 0 of 12 members carry at least one other thesis, so cohort sums across pages exceed the database total.

Active filter. Ranked lists include active company groups only (raisers, bootstrapped, scale-ups, unicorns, corporate carveouts). Acquired, IPO’d and inactive companies appear in the exits strip; stealth and speculative outliers never appear. Unlike the site-wide software-only headline count, thesis membership keeps hardware-led autonomy companies — dropping them would erase the Lights-out and Closed-loop cohorts. Company profile links are only shown for companies in the software-only dashboard set.

Honesty rules. Percentages render only above a denominator of 30; medians only with 10+ funded companies; every breakdown states its denominator and field coverage. Customer evidence exists for 9 of 12 companies; investor data for 11 of 12.

Data vintage. Computed from the ThreadMoat dataset synced September 2, 2026. Figures recompute on every sync.
